Discovering Auroville: A Haven of Peace and Sustainability

Near Serenity Beach

The Road to Auroville

This Experimental Township is just a 30-minute drive from Pondicherry, but is a world apart. It embraces universal ways of living in true sense!

If you’re driving from Chennai, it’s about 160 km and takes roughly 3-4 hours. From Bangalore, it’s a 320 km journey, around 6-7 hours. But hey, road trips are all about the journey, right?

What is so special about Auroville, you ask? Read through this post and find out for yourself!

It is not a general post, but rather I have listed down a few Auroville cafe recommendations, and also some Auroville food and travel experiences that I have personally had, in the recent few years.

I hope it helps you to get ideas to curate your own Auroville travel itinerary!

Artisan Market Area within Bamboo Plantation near Auroville

Auroville Bakery

This place is legendary for its bread and pastries. The smell of freshly baked goods hits you as soon as you enter. They also make great sandwiches and quiche etc.

Be beware that the grub is gold and gets sold out within a few hours and they only make limited quantities. So it’s best to check this place out early in the morning.

Exploring the Matrimandir

Matrimandir Auroville

If you can and are willing to see a different world, I would recommend not to return without seeing the Matrimandir – at least once.

This giant golden sphere is both a place of meditation and an architectural marvel. You also see different people, with different cultures and races co-exist happily and peacefully here.

Walking through the serene gardens and soaking in the peaceful vibes is an experience in itself. Remember, silence is golden here, quite literally!

Lunch: A Treat at Tanto Pizza

Tanto’s Pizzeria

For lunch, you should go to Tanto Pizza. Now, I know what you’re thinking—pizza in Auroville? But trust me, this place is fantastic. The pizzas are made in a wood-fired oven and are simply delicious. I have tried their pizza multiple times, and it’s always top-notch.

Beach Time: Serenity Beach and Auroville Beach

Beautiful Sunrise of Auroville

Serenity Beach is perfect for surfing. If you’re not into surfing, just watching the surfers ride the waves is exhilarating. The Stone Bridge near Serenity Beach is a local tourist attraction point and is a nice place to walk or just sit and listen to the waves (during non-peak hours)!

Auroville Beach is quieter and great for a relaxing afternoon. I have taken long walks, collected seashells, and just chilled by the water.

If you are a morning person, you can even enjoy a beautiful sunrise from any of the public beaches, or from a private beach if you’re staying in one of the resorts which has such private access.

Note: Be prepared for the heat and humidity though, that stuff is real strong in Auroville! Don’t forget to carry your sun protection gear!

Café Hopping and Evening Relaxation

Marc’s Cafe

Auroville is dotted with amazing cafes. My favourite one by far is Marc’s Cafe for some of the best coffee in town. If you have a sweet tooth, Bread & Chocolate is a good option.

As evening approached, I headed to Serenity Beach for the sunset. The view was breathtaking. The sky turned into a canvas of colors as the sun dipped below the horizon. It was the perfect spot for some quiet reflection.

Another good restaurant around is the Hope Cafe. The ambiance is laid-back, and the food is a blend of European and Indian cuisines.

The Auroville community is all about sustainable and slow living, and you can see that reflected in the food here—fresh, organic, and absolutely delicious.

It also means that one needs to be ready for long wait time to get the food prepared and rather just relax and chill while one waits.

Staying in Auroville

There are plenty of nice cozy Airbnb options available in Auroville. The villa I had booked through airbnb was right on the beach and was the perfect place to unwind after a long day.

If you prefer a more communal experience, the guesthouses in Auroville offer a chance to interact with fellow travelers and residents.

There is a Zostel close to Marc’s cafe too.

There are a lot of hotels also around, but be careful and see the pictures and read the reviews carefully before you book your stay as you may find them to be too basic at times and not what you expect.

Final Thoughts

Auroville is a haven of peace and sustainability and slow living and enjoying in the moment.

It’s a place where you can disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature and yourself.

Whether you’re meditating at the Matrimandir, surfing at Bodhi Beach, savouring a European meal or just enjoying a cup of coffee at a local cafe, Auroville offers a unique and enriching experience.

So, pack your bags and set off on a journey to Pondicherry and Auroville. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, these charming towns have got you covered.

Safe travels!
